Joseph Losey directs this 1960s psychological drama set in Venice, where Welsh novelist Tyvian Jones (Stanley Baker) falls in love with scheming, gold-digging Frenchwoman Eve (Jeanne Moreau). Realising that Eve will never love him, the writer marries his beautiful fiancee Francesca (Virna Lisi), who in turn loses her will to live when she discovers her husband’s secretly harboured desires.
