Middle-aged writer John (Alan Bates) is travelling on a train when he forgets his own identity and starts seeing visions of his wife, Helen (Gina Bellman), as a murderer and their best friend Angela (Frances Barber) as a prostitute. When he looks in his wallet, it is inexplicably filled with money. His attempts to remember clearly are hampered by memories of his abusive childhood.
