Set in the 1920s, Linda Radlett (James) grows up at Alconleigh Estate with best friend Fanny (Beecham) surrounded by wealth and opulence and with a burning desire to find true love. Whereas Linda acts on her passion with abandon Fanny is much more considerate about the consequences of choosing a romantic partner. However, for all of Linda’s yearning to embrace a bohemian lifestyle she struggles to break free from the confines of her strict disciplinarian father, Matthew (West).
