Ten-part BBC adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel from 1967 starring Frank Finlay as Jean Valjean. Set in 19th-century France, the drama tells the story of prisoner Jean Valjean who breaks his parole and spends the next two decades fleeing from obsessive police inspector and former prison guard Javert (Anthony Bate). In his quest for personal redemption, Valjean adopts Cosette (Lesley Roach), daughter of impoverished prostitute Fantine (Michele Dotrice), and is eventually elected as town mayor. But despite the events of the intervening years, can Valjean ever really shake off his past?
