Ambitious confidence trickster Stanton Carlisle (Cooper) uses his job as a carny to learn the special technique used by clairvoyant Zeena the Seer (Toni Collette) to convince her unsuspecting customers she can read their minds. Stanton leaves the carnival with his lover and fellow performer Molly (Rooney Mara), and reinvents himself as a high-society psychic in Chicago, working alongside psychiatrist Dr Lilith Ritter (Blanchett).
