Kaede is encouraged to play a virtual reality game by her best friend Sally (Ruriko Noguchi). Her trepidation and fear of being hurt results in her creating an avatar, Maple, whose sole focus is on defence. Despite this unorthodox approach Maple quickly becomes one of the strongest characters in the game. However, when the administrators make amendments to quell her dominance they soon realise that her popularity is an asset for the game.
