Director Tony Britten’s adaptation of Oliver Goldsmith’s period comedy. Wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle (Ian Redford) arranges for his daughter Kate (Susannah Fielding) to meet Charles Marlow (Mark Dexter), the son of a wealthy Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. But Marlow’s nervousness around upper-class women, contrasted with his apparent ease around women of a lower social standing, soon forces Kate to realise that she will have to pretend to be common, or Marlow will not woo her.
